Togetherness

AWAKENING

Togetherness

Naropa and the sangha come together in various ways, all of these forms are aimed at awakening: satsang, vipassana retreats, seva, mantra chanting, fire ceremonies and travel. In essence it doesn’t matter in which form we come together, Naropa’s presence always brings you deeper home.

Satsang

Literally, satsang means being together in truth. It is a gathering in which the realisation of reality, the awakening into reality, is paramount. Satsang is transmitted naturally by someone who is awake. Someone who is home. It is an energy field of presence and love that flows spontaneously. The energy field opens the reality that waits in everyone to manifest. Satsang awakens your spirit. It undermines your thinking mind and even your world of feeling. Satsang shows you reality. Satsang refers energetically to the essence of existence and thereby passes beyond comprehension.

“If asked what the spoken word consists of, I believe I would answer: silence. The spoken word is the privileged means people possess to make silence audible.”

Jacques Lusseyran

The ‘I’, that is your conditioned structure, will try to survive in every possible way. By recognising this, you don’t have to follow the resistance, and you surrender to awareness.

Throughout the year, satsangs take place on Wednesday evenings online (in English) and on Sundays (in Dutch). In addition, there are daily satsangs during the summer and winter weeks at Trimurti.

The satsangs are accompanied by live music from the mantra group Savituriya. The singing brings us more into the right hemisphere of the brain and opens the heart.

Vipassana

Vipassana means insight: seeing reality as it is.

This silent retreat is an encounter with actuality and with reality. Actuality shows you how you have become. How you have strayed. What has happened to you. Reality shows you what you are in essence. Who you were before your parents were born, as we say in Zen. Ignorance means that we only know what we think and how we feel. That we identify with our identity.

Although vipassana is often seen and practised as a technique, being together with Naropa in vipassana is an art form. You do not meditate; rather, meditation takes place. Vipassana and being together with him goes beyond method. Love, too, is not a technique. Every method is applied by ‘you’. And vipassana shows that there is no doer; shows that there is no self. The Buddha called this insight nirvana: the extinguishing of the self. Vipassana leads to liberation from the self.

Naropa brings Vipassana in a unique way. His nature is light and not serious. The approach is not strict or formal, but natural and relaxed.

“When you merge with the vital breath, you become manifest.”

Nisargadatta Maharaj

The art is to merge with the breath, to be one with existence. That is not a goal. There is no goal. You cannot do this, but it happens in the buddha-field. Thoughts are not observed. When you give no attention to thoughts, they disappear by themselves. By believing in thoughts and feelings, or by rejecting them, you feed them and they continue to dominate you. When thoughts and feelings no longer dominate and occupy you, you are free. Then there is only presence. Pure life. The breath is entered so that you merge with the breath. You do not breathe. The body breathes by itself. Meditation happens by itself. There is absorption. You are taken up by THAT. You return to natural awareness. You dissolve and you are taken over by what is.

That awakens love. Love that is free of an object and has nothing to do with the other. Love waits in our essence to become manifest. All seeking for love arises from the spirit that wants to be one. Now that you merge with the essence, it awakens. Love awakens from the essence. When you are not there, love takes possession of you.

Vipassana is the pathless path of awareness and love. They merge with each other and reach unprecedented expansion.

Travel

Almost every year we organise a group trip for people who don’t like group trips. In recent years we have been to Greece, Italy, Russia, India, Jordan, Israel, and Oman. We hold satsang in surprising locations such as deserts, castles, caves, parks, temples, restaurants, hotel lobbies, ashrams, churches and many more.

Our inner journey coincides here with adventurous travel. It brings us to unexpected places and situations.

The destination of the next trip is not known yet, but will appear here.

Absorbing Presence and Love

ShantiMayi From our first meeting in 1994, I remember the lightness, joy and above all the love and radiance that ShantiMayi poured out upon us. I received her presence and love, and it carried me from our first encounter. I was not seeking a master and was content with life.

Sensual Spirituality

Somehow, in most spiritual schools—and consequently within people themselves—sensuality and spirituality have become separated. In Life itself, this is impossible. It is a human, mental invention to tear apart and isolate what is inherently connected—to see division where none exists. The result is either a cold, abstract spirituality or a
